With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I decided to look around and see what other states did on Thanksgiving before all the turkey and trimmings. What I found, besides eating, was a lot of Turkey Trot 5ks. Having just completed the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure, this grabbed my attention.
It didn’t take long for me to decided to do a post on some 5k’s in a specific city. What did take a while was deciding on which U.S. city that I wanted to look into. I had lived in the Seattle Washington area for a couple of years and remembered seeing some of these “crazy” people as they walked on Thanksgiving morning, so I decided to list a few of the 5k’s available in the Seattle area.
The first one I found was the “Beat the Bird” Turkey Day 5K Fun Run. This is their 5th year and the event begins at Lake Hills Teen Club in Bellevue, Washington. There is a 5k which begins at 9:00 and a kids 1/2 mile which starts at 10:00. Click on the logo for a link for registration info.
If you are in the Issaquah area, this one might be for you. The Issaquah Turkey Trot is a fun & casual 5K (3.12 miles) starting at 9:00 am on Thanksgiving morning. There are no prizes, bibs, time chips, or numbers. The purpose is to come together as families and as a community during the Thanksgiving holiday and help those in need. They encourage Thanksgiving costumes & accessories! Start/Finish is at the City of Issaquah Northwest Building located on 12th Ave. behind Lowe’s. This is the 11th year of this scenic run called the Seattle Turkey Trot. It starts in the Sunset Hill neighborhood near Ballard, and finishes at Golden Gardens Park. The race begins at 9 AM. All proceeds from this race go to support the Ballard Food Bank. Not only will you have a great time at the race, you’ll be helping to provide food for those in need during the crucial holiday season. Click on Logo for more info and registration information.
This event actually has two events: the Wattle Waddle – Marathon (26.2 miles) 8 a.m. start and the Wittle Waddle – Half-Marathon (13.1 miles) 9 a.m. start. The races start and finish in the parking lot of Gas Works Park on North Northlake Way in Seattle. Again, click on logo for more info and registration.
The Tacoma City Turkey Trot is a 5k run / walk and 1 k kids-run in the Proctor district of Tacoma. Both, the start and finish will be at the Fleet Feet Sports store in Tacoma (Proctor District). They also encourage Thanksgiving costumes and accessories. The 5k begins at 9:00 and the kids 1k starts at 10:15. More information and registration available by clicking on the logo.
The Norpoint Turkey Trot is stuffed with holiday activities and features a 5k run, 2-mile run/walk and a kids dash. The race has been bringing families together on Thanksgiving morning since 1995. For many people it has become as much a part of the holiday as pumpkin pie and football. Both the 5k and 2 mile routes begin at the Center at Norpoint at 9 am.
